Tennis by the Atlantic at Sublime Comporta

There are certain places where tennis simply feels better. Comporta is one of them. Just over an hour from Lisbon, the landscape begins to open almost immediately: pine forests, sandy tracks, rice fields and, eventually, the long stretch of Atlantic coastline that defines this part of Portugal.

Sublime Comporta sits within it all, removed enough to feel like an escape, yet close enough to Lisbon to make getting there remarkably easy. We arrived by car from the city in around one hour and fifteen minutes, just in time to sneak in a sunset hit before dinner. It turned out to be the best possible introduction to Comporta: warm but never overly hot, a light ocean breeze passing through the trees, and the final light of the day falling across the court.

The Tennis

Sublime Comporta now extends across two distinct but connected worlds: Terracotta, the original property surrounded by cork trees and umbrella pines, and Sand, its newer counterpart across the estate.For tennis players, having access to both changes the rhythm of a stay.

The older court at Terracotta feels particularly embedded in the landscape, tucked among the trees with the relaxed character that first made Sublime synonymous with Comporta. Sand brings a newer sports offering of its own, including tennis alongside its expanded fitness and wellness facilities.We played both in the morning and towards sunset. During our stay, mornings began at around 22°C, with afternoons reaching roughly 28°C, but the Atlantic breeze kept even the warmer hours comfortable. In a European summer where tennis can often mean scheduling around extreme midday heat, Comporta felt refreshingly playable.

A Resort You Can Actually Eat Your Way Through

One of Sublime Comporta's strongest points is its dining. For a resort where it would be very easy to stay several nights without venturing far, there is enough variety that meals never begin to feel repetitive. Breakfast can even change depending on which side of the property you find yourself on that morning.

At Terracotta, Sem Porta remains one of the anchors of the experience, with Portuguese flavours and ingredients interpreted through a contemporary lens. It was where we spent our first evening after tennis—a beautifully executed dinner that feels right after a day outside.

Across at Sand, the arrival of Beefbar brings something more cosmopolitan to Comporta. Born in Monte Carlo, the concept feels noticeably more energetic than the quieter restaurants elsewhere on the property, yet somehow still works within the relaxed landscape. Dinner there became one of the highlights of our stay: excellent ingredients and generous dishes.

There is also Davvero, Sublime’s Italian restaurant, offering another change of pace with a menu rooted in classic Italian flavours and a more convivial atmosphere. Together with Sem Porta, Beefbar and Sublime Comporta Beach Club by the Atlantic, the variety is one of the property’s strengths. Even over a longer stay, there is little reason for dinner to ever feel repetitive.

Wellness Beyond the Spa

For us, the biggest surprise was the extent of the wellness offering. Plenty of hotels have a gym and call themselves wellness destinations. Sublime goes considerably further. Both sides of the resort have beautifully considered fitness spaces, while Sand expands the experience into something closer to a complete movement and recovery destination. There are spaces for strength training, Pilates and Reformer Pilates, boxing and personal training, alongside outdoor workout areas.

Then there is Aqua, the new wellness area at Sand. Indoor and outdoor pools, sauna, steam and spaces dedicated simply to slowing down make it one of those rare hotel wellness facilities where you genuinely want to spend time rather than visit for a single treatment.

For tennis players in particular, this changes the stay. A morning hit can naturally turn into mobility work, time in the sauna or an afternoon by the pool. Training and recovery become part of the holiday rather than something you have to actively schedule into it.

It is one of the best wellness setups we have encountered in a resort, and perhaps the clearest example of what Sublime does particularly well: encouraging you to move without ever making the experience feel overly programmed.

Beyond the Resort

From Sublime, the hotel can take guests to Sublime Comporta Beach Club at Carvalhal Beach, around ten minutes away. The setting makes an easy counterpoint to a morning on court: lunch overlooking the Atlantic followed by an afternoon on one of Comporta's vast beaches.

The climate helps too. During our visit, warm days were softened constantly by the breeze coming in from the ocean. It was hot enough to feel unmistakably like summer, but rarely so hot that being active outside became uncomfortable. That may ultimately be what makes Comporta such a good tennis destination. 

For anyone looking for a European summer escape built around movement, good food and long days outdoors, without the crowds or oppressive heat, Sublime Comporta makes a convincing case.

And if your journey takes you through Lisbon, Sublime Lisboa makes for a seamless transition in or out of Comporta. It is an easy way to spend a night or two in the city before heading south, or before flying home. Tennis can continue there too: Club 7, one of Lisbon’s best-known tennis clubs, is just a five-minute walk from the hotel, making it easy to fit in one last hit between exploring the city.
